The Shadow King Returned by InuHoshi-to-DarkPen The Shadow King Returned by InuHoshi-to-DarkPen
<Featured on Equestria Daily! Thank you so much!^^>

There are a bunch of drawings waiting to be finished, I still needed to do this. Oh well.^^'

Anyways, about King Sombra. Even thought lot of people a little bit dissapointed in the new villian, I kinda like it there is a villian, who's presence is more treatening than being there himself. Also, I kinda feel there will be more things with him the future. We will see.

No stealing. Thank you.

Sombra's physical form was destroyed, but his spirit lingers on, searching eternally for another host. Unfortunately, those he had chosen thus far were unsuitable. They would burn up from the inside because of the pure darkness flowing through them. He can't do with just any old pony; their hearts are too lightened.
No, he needs another like him. He needs a Shadow Pony.

Awesome work

For a baddie that didn't do much (or even say much) he was very effective at doing what he did best. Making others practically crapped themselves in fear at the mere mention of his name. And yeah I agree that we might just see more of him later on. I think the main problem was that so many fans expected him to be a cross of Nightmare Moon and Discord...

DemonPanther Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2012
Okay, this is enough to make him truly terrifying. If only they put something like this in the show!
Dgs-Krieger Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2012
Wow, he does really look menacing ^^
The whole dark magic thing really scared the shit out of me whne Twi and Celetia used it. Imagine the posibilities! ^^

I agree with you,I don't think King sombra is awesome design but it's disappointing about King Sombra is small talk.

Really impressed by the expression.

Sombra does have a cool-looking character design, very menacing with the whole amorphous, living wave of shadow thing. The problem is that that's ALL he has. While it's certainly possible to make a primal, bestial-type evil work well as an antagonist (see: Lavos in Chrono Trigger), in order to do so, you have to make the evil force so overwhelmingly powerful and destructive that it's terrifying. Sombra spends 99% of the two-part episode being repelled by Cadance's magic, and then when he finally does break through, he promptly gets vaporized by the crystal ponies' defense mechanism. That's not very terrifying, and that's what makes him a dud of a villain. Oh well... wasted opportunity.

Good Lord, you people...

frong Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2012
Your point? I already acknowledged that Sombra was a cool design with unrealized potential. The difference between him and, say, Sauron is that Sauron's forces actually achieve several victories over the course of LotR before he's ultimately defeated. Sombra doesn't achieve anything other than sealing Shining Armour's magic temporarily. That doesn't amount to much. The writers needed to put more time into showing how fearsome Sombra's dark magic is.

Just to prove my point, consider the scene with the door that showed Twilight and Spike their worst fears. That was an interestingly scary plot device. I would've given Sombra the chance to expand that magic over the entire city, like Scarecrow wanted to do in Batman Begins. That would've made for a genuinely terrifying act of villainy, one which would've also highlighted Twilight's orders to complete her mission alone (because the rest of the city is crippled by their own fears). I would've been genuinely impressed by that, and it would've made Sombra a high-quality primal antagonist. See what I mean by wasted opportunities?

Sombra wasn't supposed to be actually physically doing things. He was mostly a metaphor for stress, and constantly looming outside.
frong Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2012
Stuff that just looms there isn't very scary. Stuff that does scary things is scary. Doesn't have to be a lot, doesn't have to be blatantly obvious... it just has to be something. That's why I think that subtly spreading the shows-you-your-worst-fear magic over a larger area would've worked really well. It would've made Sombra more fearsome without having him outright destroy the place.
Clure Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2012
How WASN'T He scary? He was slowly, But surely breaking through their only defence, Ready to come in and enslave and destroy them.
frong Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2012
Mostly because basically nothing happened while he was attempting to break through. If the effects of his magic had slowly started seeping through the barrier, it would've been a lot scarier.
Clure Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2012
Try looking at this from the Crystal ponies' Position. an evil overlord who once made everyone miserable, is returning, and is only held back by a slowly deteriorating shield.
Yeah. Not scary.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that actually liked King Sombra.

He was like a reaper in mass effect
lanternjoe Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2012
They fucking better do more with him. I prefer my villains to be characters.
firefanatic Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
You know, when he "died", his horn flew off elsewhere. There may be a chance that he returns. And maybe the horn becomes like the one ring...
NavelColt Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2012  Student Writer
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed his horn being intact might mean he comes back. It wouldn't be hard, after all. I doubt we'll never see the Crystal Kingdom again, what with Cadence being the Princess of it.

Eeeeyyy, niiiiceeeeeee!!
Chrislynx Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2012
Very cool! I especially like how you did the effect around his eyes and horn.

And I hope you are correct about him showing up more in the future. He seems too interesting to be gone so quickly, and his defeat was a little ambiguous.

Also, I was a bit surprised to see Celestia and then Twilight casting dark magic. I wonder if we've truly seen the last of that?

He was great and so is this picture^^

Not that talky as Discord or Queen Chrysalis but still good.
I also think he's the first villain that (highly probably) died in the end on MLP.
DreamVirusOmega Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I liked how they did Sombra actually. The villains before him were more direct, he was more imposing. Always visible in his shadow form as he slowly began to descend over the kingdom, imbuing a sense of urgency and despair into the situation. Yeah, he could have done more, but what we got wasn't as bad as some people say it was.
toxyn16 Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Sure his appearence and all is dangerous and all, Maybe a little more screen time and a couple more threats of power could've been better, But overall his design is great, and deep down, he did more the Chrysalis in a way, since he took over a kingdom, threw it into darkness and turned all of the Crystal ponies into slaves. So he' had a lot done already. '^'
crasydwarf Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2012
I liked the little things in the episode.
So the villain was a bit .. absent ... it happens. We don't need a Discord/Chrysalis every episode
To much "glass half empty" going around these days ...

Sorry, digressing.
Lovely drawing. Like it that you did a frontal shot of him, quite interesting.
Nice shading too.
